Enterprise Education mantage

Background

The SEE for the 2012 Games Core Group has identified ‘enterprise education’ as a signature project for 2009-2010. This means that it is an area of special focus where we want to add value in the region inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. This theme maps neatly at a number of strategic levels not least:

  • National – London 2012’s Domestic Education Programme ‘Get Set’ has an enterprise strand of activity to make available to all educational institutions across the UK: “Enterprise is a very important part of the London 2012 Games. We want to use the Olympic and Paralympic Games to develop young people’s creativity, entrepreneurial and innovative skills.”
  • Regional – this theme of enterprise education will contribute to a number of the ‘five golden opportunities’ and 10 legacies stated in the Yorkshire Gold Strategy.
  • SEE for the 2012 Games – the theme links directly to the Framework for Action Objective 2: “Innovative use of sport, culture and the Olympic ideal to encourage success, achievement and enterprise”

Enterprise Education – Suggested Definition

"Enterprise Education is about helping young people develop the skills they will need when they leave education to be the region’s future enterprising employees, business leaders or entrepreneurs."

What are the main opportunities for developing an enterprise education legacy linked to 2012 in Yorkshire and the Humber?

  1. Increasing the number of schools, colleges and universities registered on the Get Set domestic education programme
  2. Achieve significant London 2012 support for the ‘Real Business Challenge’ as one of their flagship enterprise education projects, and deliver the ‘best challenge yet’ with a high profile launch event in Yorkshire during 2009
  3. Engaging Yorkshire businesses in enterprise education activity
  4. Raising awareness of key enterprise education projects with potential,  and developing capacity to deliver them on a sustained basis in more locations within the region
  5. Adding value to enterprise education activity by encouraging collaborative working and the sharing of ideas between existing partnerships and enterprise networks in the region using the values of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
