PODIUM regional conference

Podium, the Further and Higher Education unit for the 2012 Games recently completed a nationwide series of regional conferences attended by over 700 people aimed at Further and Higher Education sector representatives entitled ‘Road to the 2012 Games’. Here’s what happened in Yorkshire...

On the 9th of April the Podium team and regional partners held a conference at the University of Leeds attended by over 50 partners, held with the support of the SEE for the 2012 Games Network.  The conference covered topics such as the London 2012 Volunteer Programme and Cultural Olympiad to Pre-Games Training Camps. Thirteen separate Further Education Colleges, 11 Higher Education Institutions and thirteen other organisations registered to attend the event, which included special presentations by the Chair of the SEE for the 2012 Games Core Group Sharon Pickering, as well as Yorkshire Gold, Leeds and Sheffield Hallam Universities and the Inspire Coordinator for Yorkshire, James Tabberer. Presentations from that event are available on the Podium website now: http://www.podium.ac.uk/resources/regions.

Following this excellent event, Podium hopes to work closely with colleagues from the region to progress their ideas and enthusiasm for the Games!

London 2012 and Get Set Update

PODIUM logoThe next few months will see another step-up in activity around 2012 all over the country, as we approach the ‘2 Years to Go’ mark, before the opening of London 2012. This month has seen the launch of the highly-symbolic London 2012 Mascots, and soon to follow will be the main Volunteer Programme launching later this summer. Podium has seen a marked increase in Games-inspired and related activity in universities and colleges around the country, as well as at LOCOG – with a steadily increasing number of Inspire Mark projects involving further and higher education institutions being approved, and a growing number of colleges joining the Get Set Network.

21 Colleges are now members of the Get Set Network nationally, with 3 of those from Yorkshire and the Humber: The Grimsby Institute of Further Education recently joined Bishop Burton and Wakefield Colleges in the exclusive club of the most engaged institution nationwide.

Both the Get Set and Podium websites have recently been re-launched to include many more resources and useful information for colleges and universities.
