Following on from a successful Get Set workshop in March where many teachers learned how to get the most out of the London 2012 domestic education programme, Scarborough Borough Council is now seeking to raise wider awareness of the opportunities of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games at an inspiring event at Baron’s Leisure Centre (Scarborough Rugby Club) on Tuesday the 29th of June 2010.
The event details are still being finalised but we understand that Steve Cram will be at the event which will also include a number of ‘free’ sessions for professional, education and voluntary sectors throughout the afternoon and evening. There may also be a school sports event with the involvement of local schools and Young Leaders.
Andrew Williams, Leisure & Community Services Officer at Scarborough Borough Council explains: “The aim of the event is to try to raise the profile of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and the potential legacy for various sectors in our area. Hopefully the event will give those present the desire and good practice examples to go away and deliver at a local level. The motivation for the local authority is the potential outcome of increased participation.”
Instrumental to the sporting and education aspects of this event is Mike Tildsley, Scarborough and Filey School Sports Partnership Development Manager. Mike was also involved in helping organise a ‘Get Set for Get Set‘workshop in March 2010 with local teachers from 34 primary and secondary schools. Erin Munns from the London 2012 Education Team delivered the workshop and Mike says it was an excellent session. “I spoke with teachers on the day and they told me that it had really opened their eyes to the ways in which they could use the inspiration of the Games across the curriculum, not just sport, but other subjects as well.”
Furthermore, one of the schools in Scarborough that had registered on the Get Set website and started to get engaged in the many ideas contained therein has won an opportunity to visit the Olympic Park in due course which should be extremely inspiring for the students and teachers alike.
